Entegra Bank announces $250,000 contribution to WCU scholarship effort

first_imgIn recognition that more than 20 percent of Entegra Bank’s workforce in Western North Carolina graduated from Western Carolina University, the financial institution’s board of directors recently announced a $250,000 contribution to provide scholarship assistance to students from the region who want to study in WCU’s College of Business. The creation of the Entegra Bank Endowed Scholarship Fund comes after an employee survey earlier this year found that, of the bank’s 205 employees across WNC, 42 received degrees from WCU, said Roger Plemens, president and CEO of Entegra Bank. In addition, 15 spouses, 22 children, five parents and 17 siblings of the bank’s employees received degrees from WCU, said Plemens, who earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration at WCU in 1977.“Western Carolina University has such an impact on Western North Carolina, and Western Carolina University has had a major influence on Entegra Bank,” said Plemens. “We think it is very important for businesses to provide scholarship support for students, and we hope other businesses will make that financial commitment.”The contribution, made earlier this spring, will provide scholarship assistance to students from Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Polk, Swain and Transylvania counties. Recipients of the Entegra Bank Endowed Scholarship must be full-time students majoring in accounting, business administration and law, computer information systems, entrepreneurship, finance, management or sales and marketing. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years for recipients maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Entegra gift is the latest as part of WCU’s “Lead the Way,” a comprehensive fundraising campaign inspired by the leadership of Chancellor David O. Belcher, who went on medical leave Dec. 31 after battling brain cancer since April 2016.Belcher and wife Susan announced last October their pledge of $1.23 million in financial support for the “Lead the Way” effort, an announcement that has spawned several other significant contributions, including the recent gift from Entegra.“I have had the good fortune to serve on the WCU Foundation Board during the ‘Belcher years.’ I have seen first-hand the great success WCU has experienced under Chancellor Belcher’s leadership,” said Plemens. “By giving to the ‘Lead the Way’ campaign, we want to keep that momentum going.”The “Lead the Way” campaign held its public launch on March 1, with a goal of raising a minimum of $60 million in contributions by the spring of 2019. Belcher announced at his 2012 installation address that increasing the number of endowed scholarships would be the No. 1 philanthropic priority of his administration. More than 200 new endowed scholarship funds have been established at WCU since then.In addition to increasing the financial support available to WCU students through endowed scholarships, the fundraising effort also will seek support for experiential learning opportunities such as travel grants, paid internships, undergraduate and graduate research activities, and attendance at meetings of professional organizations. A third prong of the campaign will emphasize programmatic support to bolster the work of WCU’s colleges, schools, departments and programs.Entegra Bank, formerly Macon Bank, began in 1922 with one small building in Macon County. Today, the financial institution operates 18 full-service branches and three loan production offices in Brevard, Cashiers, Columbus, Hendersonville, Highlands, Franklin, Saluda, Sylva, Murphy and Waynesville in WNC; in Anderson, Chesnee and Greenville in Upstate South Carolina; and in Duluth, Gainesville and Jasper in northern Georgia. The gift to the “Lead the Way” campaign is not Entegra’s first financial contribution to WCU. When it was called Macon Bank, the financial institution, under Plemens’ leadership, created the Michael Morgan Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2007 through contributions totaling $44,000. A 1984 finance graduate of WCU, Michael Morgan served as the first vice president and chief lending officer of Macon Bank. The fund provides scholarships to juniors and senior from WCU who are majoring in business finance. In addition to Plemens, members of the Entegra Bank Board of Directors are Jim Garner, agent with Wayah Insurance who earned his bachelor’s degree in 1974 and master’s degree in 1976, both from WCU; Fred Jones, attorney with the firm of Jones, Key, Melvin & Patton; Ronald Beale, general contractor with Beale Construction Inc.; Beverly Mason, owner/broker of Lamplighter Realty; Adam Burrell, physician with Burrell Family and Obstetrical Care; Louis Buck, former WCU College of Business faculty member and administrator; Chuck Edwards, owner and operator of McDonald’s restaurants; Matt Dunbar, managing director of the Upstate Carolina Angel Network; Craig Fowler, WCU chief information officer; and Doug Kroske, retiree. For more information or to make a gift to WCU, visit the website LeadTheWay.wcu.edu.last_img read more

Boeing rolls out first 777X

first_imgBoeing has rolled out the first Boeing 777X-9 which will be used for the static testing. This non-flying 777X now heads off to nearly a year of testing to verify design strength. The second airframe is well-advanced and will roll out in January 2019 and fly in March.Boeing is building two models of the 777X family: the -9 and longer range -8.The driving force behind the 777X is Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, whose airline is the lead buyer with an order for 150.The 777-9X offers seating for more than 400 passengers, depending on an airline’s configuration choices. With a range of more than 8,200 nautical miles (15,185 km), the aircraft will have the lowest operating cost per seat of any commercial aircraft. The second member of the family, the 777-8X, will be the most flexible jet in the world claims Boeing. The aircraft will seat 350 passengers and offer a range capability of more than 9,300 nautical miles (17,220 km).Boeing 777XShip number 2 under construction. This will be the first one to fly.Sir Tim describes the 777X as “an absolute peach”.Key to his enthusiasm is the aircraft’s economics — it is 20 percent more efficient per seat than the industry’s long-time benchmark the 777-300ER.The 777X combines the best features of the current 777 with a longer fuselage, new engine and the composite wing design from the Boeing 787.It also features 20 percent larger windows and lower pressurization altitude to reduce jet lag.According to Sir Tim, the Boeing 777X is in good shape.Speaking to a media roundtable at IATA in Sydney in June,  Sir Tim told AirlineRatings.com that the first aircraft would be delivered to Emirates in June 2020.On where the program is, Sir Tim said: “It’s in good shape and just about where needs to be.”The engine (GE9X) was performing very well, he added.“Surprisingly good and the engine is a lot better than most [at this stage of its testing progarm] – it’s a good story.”777XClose up of the 777XCertification testing of the GE9X engine began in May 2017. Beyond flight testing, the engine recently completed icing tests at GE Aviation’s facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and continues crosswind testing at the Peebles Test Operation in Ohio. Engine certification is expected in 2019.The test flying of the engine to validate bench testing is critical for Boeing to provide hard data to Qantas for its Project Sunrise for a Sydney to New York and Sydney to London non-stop capability for the 777X-8.777XThe first 777X displays the folding wingtipQantas’ chief Alan Joyce told AirlineRatings.com that both the Boeing 777X-8 and Airbus, with its A350, can meet the airline’s challenge of an aircraft capable of flying from New York to Sydney non-stop with 300 passengers.READ: Qantas Sunrise Project on Knife Edge Boeing is proposing a tweaked version of its Boeing 777-8X while Airbus is pushing a similarly tweaked version of its A350 aircraft that Singapore Airlines has ordered. What is not clear is how much each aircraft beats the 300 passengers mark and what the economics will be.“Both will be bit different but will have enough seats to make it economical,” said Mr. Joycelast_img read more

Out-of-form Pogba under scrutiny at Man United

first_img“Now, it’s my problem and Paul’s problem to deal with it and try to improve his performance level,” Mourinho said. “You don’t need to be a liar.”Pogba’s position in United’s lineup has been the subject of much debate in recent weeks, even more so since Alexis Sanchez joined the club last month in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan to give Mourinho a very different type of attacking option. It is widely accepted that Pogba is at his best when he plays on the left of a midfield three, as he did to great effect during his time at Juventus. It gives him less defensively responsibility, compared to being in a midfield two, therefore allowing him to roam and make more of his trademark attacking surges. He started this season playing alongside Nemanja Matic in a central-midfield two, and produced impressive performances — particularly late in games when Marouane Fellaini came on as a substitute to give United extra protection in midfield.“Just let the horses run freely,” was Mourinho’s assessment after United scored three late goals on the break — one coming from Pogba — in a 4-0 win at Swansea in August in the Premier League.Pogba was out for two months from mid-September with a hamstring injury, then served a three-match ban after getting a red card against Arsenal on Dec. 2 on his fifth game back in the team.“He was out for a long, long time,” Mourinho said on Friday, “and in this moment, he is not playing well. Period. And the team needs him at a good level, and when he is not a good level the team is not as good as when he plays phenomenal.”Pogba’s most recent two starts have been the most concerning.Against Tottenham, where he again started in a central-midfield two, he was tactically indisciplined and lacked focus. He was regularly seen wandering around and vacating the central areas, leaving Matic swamped and exposed. It came as no surprise when he was substituted early, failing to finish a Premier League game he started for only the fourth time since rejoining United.Against Newcastle on Sunday, Pogba didn’t look fit — he was seen grimacing during the warmup — and was taken off by Mourinho soon after failing to react in the buildup to Newcastle’s winning goal, scored by Matt Ritchie. Mourinho said it was a tactical decision and Pogba wasn’t injured. MOST READ SEA Games: PH still winless in netball after loss to Thais “In the last couple of matches, he didn’t play well,” Mourinho said on Friday. “Period. End of story.”Except it won’t be. Not with Pogba in this kind of form.Mourinho was in spiky mood at his news conference ahead of United’s FA Cup fifth-round match against Huddersfield on Saturday, angry at having to respond to speculation — or “lies,” as he preferred to call it — that his relationship with Pogba had soured and that the pair do not communicate.Other reports said Pogba was irritated at having to play in a deeper position in midfield. All false, according to Mourinho.ADVERTISEMENT Pogba again appeared to be playing in a midfield two, though Mourinho insisted on Friday the Frenchman was playing on the left of a midfield three in that game, contrary to what pundits thought. For a player of his athleticism, mobility and ability — not to mention price tag — it seems strange that Pogba can perform only one specific role on the field.“If you are going to play in midfield, you should be able to play in a two or a three,” former United captain Roy Keane said about Pogba, in his role as a TV pundit.Mourinho said Pogba will play against Huddersfield for what could prove to be an intriguing test of character for a player in the spotlight.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next FILE- In this file photo dated Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba reacts during the English Premier League soccer match against Watford at Vicarage Road stadium in Watford, England. (AP Photo/Matt Dunham, FILE)MANCHESTER, England — Buried in his bulky, hooded Manchester United jacket, Paul Pogba slumped in a seat in the dugout and stared into space with a blank look on his face. His team was 1-0 down to relegation-threatened Newcastle in the English Premier League and heading for a second loss in three games. United needed a savior from somewhere but that wasn’t going to be Pogba, its record signing and most recognizable player.ADVERTISEMENT Judiciary Committee set to take over Trump impeachment probe That’s because Pogba had been substituted after 66 minutes. The previous match, he was dropped from the starting lineup. The match before that, against Tottenham at Wembley Stadium, he’d lasted only 62 minutes before being taken off soon after receiving stern words on the touchline by manager Jose Mourinho. The France midfielder is experiencing the toughest period of his second coming at United, with question marks over his role in the team and his on-field discipline.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSBoxers Pacquiao, Petecio torchbearers for SEA Games openingMoving for a then-world-record fee of 105 million euros (then $116 million) from Juventus in August 2016 has guaranteed that Pogba will never escape scrutiny during his time at Old Trafford. And the spotlight is on him more than ever at present. first_imgMan Utd plan mega offer for ‘devastated’ Koulibalyby Paul Vegas9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United are preparing a mega offer for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. The Mirror says United will offer Koulibaly an escape route away from Italy’s racists.United have made the 27-year-old Senegal international a prime summer target after failing to land him before the start of the season. And they believe Koulibaly will this time attempt to force his departure from the Serie A club after being targeted by bigots. The issue has left Koulibaly devastated – and a move away from Italy now appears to be the most likely outcome.Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has ruled out the player’s departure during the January transfer market. He has claimed to have rejected a £95million bid from United in the summer – a declaration that has been denied at Old Trafford. But while United sources insist their interest in Koulibaly never went beyond making an enquiry about a valuation, they have made signing the France-born defender a priority. John Calipari Announces That Every Kentucky Player Will Submit Name For NBA Draft

first_imgJohn Calipari asks fans to vote for former Kentucky players in the NBA All-Star game.coach calipari nba videoThis year, the NCAA made a big college basketball rule change, which allows players to withdraw from the draft process after the NBA Combine, allowing players to receive real feedback on their prospects. It is an incredibly pro-player rule, one of the few that the NCAA has enacted in recent years, and as you’d expect, Kentucky head coach John Calipari is a fan. Today, he made an announcement that shouldn’t be all that surprising with the new rule, but will likely make some waves anyway: every single Kentucky player, walk-ons included, will enter the Draft in hopes of a combine invite.Met with our team today. Told them that during the season it’s about the team and sacrificing for each other – which they did this year.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 23, 2016When the season’s over, it’s about each individual player and what’s right for them and their families.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 23, 2016With that being said, every player who is eligible for the draft, including our walk-ons, will submit their names for the NBA Draft …— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 23, 2016… in hopes of being invited to the combine in May.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 23, 2016The new rule states they can submit their name a total of three times. If they choose to withdraw, they have until 10 days after the combine— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 23, 2016It’s a true win-win for the student-athlete.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 23, 2016Calipari has long said that the NBA Draft is just as important  for his program as the national championship. One of his program mottos is “succeed and proceed.” No one has gamed the one-and-done era like Calipari, so it is no surprise that he likes this new rule.More: Vote In Our “Most Annoying People In Sports Media” Bracket >>>last_img read more
