BY MARCH station booking offices managed by British train operating company Southern will be equipped with Shere’s Manned Rail Ticketing computer-based ticketing issuing machines. As well as offering a full range of UK tickets, seat reservations, online credit card authorisation and real-time running information, Smart is integrated with the operator’s database of season ticket holders to simplify renewals. Thameslink, which shares a number of stations with Southern, has also adopted Smart for 24 stations it operates. In January Southern began installing 184 Shere self-service touch-screen ticket vending machines at its stations, following successful trials at East Croydon. The machines take cash, credit card and debit card payments.
