The delegation hosted a project launch and stakeholders workshop on Tuesday 7 March 2017 at the Garraway Hotel’s Conference room.Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Urban Renewal, Careen Prevost said they will be looking at an assessment of the current situation in Dominica as well as review, and analyze and integrate the various tourism policy documents “to see how we can fit in the development of the cruise sector guided by the strategy that has already been set out”.Dominica already has a tourism policy, tourism master plan and the DDA corporate strategy and action plan.“We also plan to define a consultative process and mechanism for the preparation of this cruise policy and cruise tourism strategy and action plan and we do hope to take into consideration the involvement and the comments and feedback from the key leaders, organizations and entities in the public and private sector which is the reason why you are here today,” Prevost stated. The Discover Dominica Authority is hopeful that this cruise policy and action plan will assist in developing the overall vision as well as define strategies, policies and an action plan for each area of concern. This Prevost said, will not limited to tourism planning and product development, marketing and promotions, standards and accreditation, man power development, investments, infrastructure, transportation, environment, culture, gender and poverty reduction. In addition, the consultants will review tourism trends taking into account competing destinations in the region.“As you are aware Dominica is not the only cruise port in our immediate vicinity and we are competing against other islands similar to ours, but we do know that we have a unique product to offer and the aim of this cruise tourism strategy and action plan will allow us to look at our unique preposition and see how we can develop this further,” Prevost informed.Prevost noted that the pool of consultants selected for this consultancy come with “vast experience” in the areas of tourism, infrastructure development, strategy planning and research.“I can tell you just from our initial discussion with them yesterday that they’ve already given us some ideas that the Minister has instructed us that we should work on immediately even before the completion of this plan,” Prevost said.
