Driftwood club cuts ribbon to Haven garden

(Staff photo by Craig Alaniz)By CRAIG ALANIZPort Isabel-South Padre PRESSTuesday, the Driftwood Garden Club held a ribbon cutting ceremony for The Haven garden located at the South Padre Island Golf Course on Torrey Pines Drive.Marne Law, project director, said the site awarded to the Driftwood Garden Club was landscaped with paths, irrigation and palm trees. She said 44 native trees and bushes were selected to attract native species to the garden.“We wanted a place that would attract birds and butterflies,” Law said.Each plant species is labeled with instructions and their name to encourage local landscapers to use when they are working on their own gardens and lawns, Law said.The garden was awarded the Rose Cup Trophy for being the most outstanding garden in the district composed of the valley counties, Law said. It was the first win for the garden club.When the garden is mature, it will have be a retreat from the sun, Law said. It will be a good place to relax and watch birds.The SPIGC donated the Oak Leaf on the bird bath and Marne Law donated a drip system. Jack Williams donated labor and materials for the cedar sign in front of the garden.Want the whole story?
